Isabel paused to catch her breath.

The humid breeze fluttered the leaves of the palm trees, and the Sun beat down.

Isabel and her little brother, Felipe, were supposed to be home doing chores, but it was too nice outside to be stuck inside cleaning.

Instead, she had convinced Felipe to come on an adventure with her.

They were pretending that they were great explorers in an unfamiliar land, as their grandfather had been.

Isabel wanted to be as far away from the town as possible, but Felipe was lagging behind.

“Come on!”

she called out, turning around.

Felipe had stopped walking and was staring into the distance.

Isabel followed his gaze out to the water, and her eyes widened.

She had never seen so many ships in her life.

“We should go home,” Felipe said, his voice shaking.

Isabel wanted to stay and see what would happen, but she knew Felipe was right.

She grabbed his hand and ran.

When Isabel and Felipe reached their small wooden house, they found Abuelo outside.

He crouched in the narrow strip of shade beneath a palm tree and drew a knife across a stone to sharpen the blade.

“ Abuelo, we saw ships!”

Isabel cried.

“Many ships,” Felipe added.

Abuelo’s face darkened.

Abuelo

“What flag did they fly?”

he asked.

他问。

Isabel thought for a moment.

“English, I think.

They were heading toward the island, where the watchtower stands.”

Abuelo stood up.

“Go inside,” he said abruptly.

Just then, Isabel’s father came running down the road from the fort.

Hearing the commotion, Isabel’s mother came to the door.

“What’s going on?”

she asked.

她问。

“Everyone inside,” said Isabel’s father.

Isabel

As they moved into the house, Isabel heard a loud boom in the distance.

It sounded a little like thunder.

“Was that a cannon?”

she wondered out loud.

“English pirates are attacking St.

Augustine,” Father explained.

“They know that the King of Spain often sends ships to the southern part of the New World.

The land there is filled with silver and gold that the ships bring back to Spain.

We don’t have any treasure in St.

Augustine, but they may think we’re hiding it for Spain.”

Felipe’s eyes grew wide with fear, but Isabel felt a flicker of excitement.

“We’re being attacked by pirates?”

she asked.

她问。

Abuelo had told her stories about pirates.

Abuelo

His ship had once been attacked when he sailed across the ocean from Spain to settle in La Florida.

Abuelo had told other stories about the early days of St.

Augustine, too.

In the beginning, there had been many battles, but for years the town had been peaceful.

Isabel was thrilled that something exciting was finally happening.

She ran to the doorway.

She wanted to see for herself what the pirates looked like.

“Isabel,” Mother called sharply.

“Isabel,”

“Stay inside.”

Isabel stopped in the doorway.

She wished she had stayed near the shore instead of coming home with Felipe.

All around her, she could see the other townspeople running and shouting to one another as they scrambled to gather their belongings.

“ Are people leaving?”

she asked.

她问。

Father nodded.

“Our defenders don’t think they can hold the fort against the English.

Their forces greatly outnumber ours,” he said.

“They are abandoning their posts!”

Abuelo shouted in disbelief.

“Is this a town of cowards?”

Father looked sternly at Abuelo.

“You know what the pirates will do.

It’s not safe to stay here.”

“Where will we go?”

Felipe asked.

“We will take cover in the forest,” Father replied.

Mother began moving around the house, gathering food and blankets to take with them, but Abuelo stayed still.

His face was serious and a little angry.

“I built this place,” said Abuelo.

Abuelo

“I won’t abandon it.”

Isabel’s father gestured to her and Felipe, and then to her mother.

“We need to protect them,” he said firmly.

Isabel’s mother fastened a gold chain around her neck and handed a large bundle to Isabel.

She picked up another one for herself.

The bundle was heavy, but Isabel didn’t dare complain.

She and Felipe followed their parents to the door.

Abuelo still hadn’t moved.

Abuelo

“ Abuelo,” Isabel said softly.

Abuelo,”

“ Are you coming with us?”

Abuelo sighed and straightened his shoulders.

Abuelo

He nodded once.

“Yes, let’s go.”

Isabel and her family joined the crowd of fleeing townspeople.

On the edge of the town lay farms, and past the farms, thick woods.

Abuelo stopped when they reached the beginning of the forest.

“This is far enough.”

Father looked to Mother, and she nodded and put down the bundle she carried.

They could still see St.

Augustine from where they stood.

Cannon fire thundered in the distance.

Isabel and her family sat huddled closely together beneath the trees.

Finally, the cannons fell silent.

“Is it over?”

Felipe asked.

Father shook his head.

“The pirates will ransack the fort and the town for valuables.

They won’t consider it a worthwhile attack unless they get some gold.”

“Is there any gold in the town?”

Isabel asked.

Everything in it was built simply.

She had overheard people complaining that there wouldn’t be enough food unless a ship arrived from Spain soon.

It seemed unlikely that the townspeople were hiding riches.

Abuelo shook his head.

Abuelo

“They won’t find much of value.”

After several minutes, the smell of smoke filled Isabel’s nose.

“They are burning the town,” Abuelo said.

Abuelo

The entire town was built of wood and palm branches, so Isabel knew it wouldn’t take long to burn to the ground.

She looked toward Abuelo and saw the pain in his eyes.

She remembered all the stories he had told her about his life.

What she had seen as an exciting adventure had been filled with fear and difficulty for him.

He had left everything behind in Spain to come to the New World.

He had lost friends and family members to battles, hunger, and sickness as the Spanish worked to establish the settlement for the king.

Abuelo had sacrificed everything for this place.

Abuelo

“ Abuelo,” Isabel said softly.

Abuelo,”

“You always told us that hardships bring strength.”

Isabel and Abuelo looked out over the town.

They took in the hazy sky and orange flames that flickered and crackled over their home, which was quickly becoming a blackened ruin.

“Yes,” Abuelo replied.

“We will rebuild, and St.

Augustine will be stronger than ever.”
